Why “The Today Card”?

The title ‘The Today Card’ comes from a post written by Patrick Rhone about one part of his productivity work flow.

If you plan on making the most out of the ‘Dashed’ Today Cards check out the dash/plus action process from Patrick Rhrone.

Are you selling printed cards?

No.  (but you can donate here) The truth of the matter is that in order to make any type of profit and to make it worth my time I’d either need to charge an outrageous amount for the cards or would need to get a few hundred thousand of them printed. Needless to say, I don’t have the time or resources to print and sell them and this was never the intention. With that said, if you’re interested in buying cards, drop me a line on Twitter (@kvl) and I’ll see what I can do.

Why give the designs away for free?

When I started creating these designs/cards I did so for my own benefit and use, I wanted something that would serve my use/purpose better. I searched and searched for vertical index cards (and cards with alternative designs) and couldn’t find anything other than posts about other people who were looking for the same things. It only made sense that if I was creating something for myself and other people were looking for a similar thing that I might as well share. I am accepting donations though.

How do I print them?

Other than downloading the designs you want (with or without crop marks) it is completely up to you.  You might find that you can print them at home on blank index cards and this works for you, or you might decided (like me) to pay someone else to do all of the printing/cutting work for you.

I’m having a local print shop produce mine for me.  For my Today Cards I have them printed on a little heavier stock (slightly higher cost) because I was something sturdier to last the day, but for my general use cards, I have them printed on index stock, which is thicker than paper but thinner than card stock; your standard index card stock.

What about the Designer Cards?

The design for these cards were inspired by the cards found at www.helvetindex.com. Because black and white versions on thinner stock were not available for sale I decided to print some of my own up for personal use.

What about traditional index cards?

A standard horizontal index card can be turned vertical and used, either on the lined side or on the blank side, but I was looking for something more. I simply got tired of writing across the lines on standard index cards or without the lines all together.

Why no horizontal designs?

The entire point of these designs/cards being created was to have something more functional for my everyday use, something that was more ergonomic (vertical). Simply put, I hate horizontal index cards and 99.9% of the time end up turning them to be vertical as it is. Perhaps in the future I might do some horizontal designs (if I get enough donations) but as things stand now I’ll only be offering vertical designs.

Why aren’t the designs in colour?

Simple. I’m in some ways colour blind, and in other ways very cheap. These cards were meant to be used and thrown away so why waste the extra money to get colour cards printed if they are just going to end up in the trash/recycling later on. If you want coloured cards, great, design your own but I’ll never offer coloured cards here. (If I get enough donations I might have the motivation to offer coloured cards, I’m just sayin’.)

Can I print the cards and sell them?

Nope. I’ve uploaded and shared these cards for the open use of all (see the License). I’m openly sharing them to help others be more productive and allow them to focus on creating meaningful work and I hope that others will do that same. Helping others to be more productive shouldn’t be something we do for money (at least not in my mind) it is something we should do for the betterment of humanity1. So please don’t try to monezite the Today Card or any iteration of them, that simply isn’t cool.
